Factory will probably remain closed now - cheaper for oligarch owner, that is pocketing insurance money and / or governmental support. Spending it on Bahamas, not on new factory buildings. People will have no job any more. Have to sell vegetables and potatoes on street or become prostutes to make ends meat. Russia in decline. 9 % have no job.

Well, no. The Zaporozhetz 965 was NOT a copy of the Fiat 500.It was a stylistic cousin to the Fiat 600, but not the Cinq. The MEMZ engines however, were a purely Soviet design as they were in a V configuration which helped with servicing in the cold, Russian winter. The later ZAZ 968 borrowed some of it’s styling from the NSU Prinz, which itself is admittedly a copy of the 1960 Chevrolet Corvair. All of these cars were air cooled, but they all used engine designs unique to their respective makers. I believe the Fiats may have been 2 cylinder like a 2CV, but the Corvair was a flat 6 like a Porsche 911, and the NSU was a flat 4 (IIRC). NSU is probably better known as the first manufacturer to build a Wankel Rotary powered production car: The NSU Sport Prinz. They developed the engine jointly with Hiroshima Japan-based Mazda which introduced the engine in the Cosmo shortly thereafter. However, it was Mazda, and not NSU that perfected the Apex seals and made it possible. So, as you can see, cars are not developed in a vacuum, and some sharing of ideas and technology is inevitable. As for Volkswagen, they stole their designs from Tatra’s Hanz Ledwinka after the invasion of Czechoslovakia, but that’s another story…

I would like to point out that the Saporoshez/Zaporoshetz cars were built in Soviet Ukraine not in Soviet Russia! The city of Zaporishshya (in Russian: Saporoshje) where they were built and are being built till today has always been an Ukrainian city! Zaporishshya were founded centuries ago by Cossaks as a focus and stronghold of Ukrainian independence!
